  2. About. Back in Mike Oldfield should have been on top of the world. But behind the scenes he was suffering. Mike’s debut album ‘Tubular Bells’ was an acclaimed multimillion seller out of left field, and its successor, ‘Hergest Ridge’, sold prodigiously too, despite a critical backlash which Mike took hard.

  4. Jul 17,  · Hergest Ridge is different from any other album Mike did. Part one is superb as it gently whistles in and builds up very subtly. The Oboe solo is very beautiful and it's been compared to Vaughan Williams pastoral music. Side two is where it fails though/5().

  5. May 19,  · As somebody who listened to a lot of Mike Oldfield in the mids, Hergest Ridge stands out as the only Oldifield album that I can still listen to. I consider this somewhat odd, as among Oldfield's first three records, this usually receives the most lukewarm reviews/5(66).
